Speech by Mr Carmel Fsadni
(International Hotel Management Institute, Switzerland)
at the KDU Convocation Ceremony 2007.

Distinguished guests, colleagues, parents and graduands.

It gives me great pleasure to be here today. This is my second visit to your College this year and I must say that if I can manage it, I never refuse the change to visit your beautiful country.

My colleague, Mr. H. Buerki, President of IMI was not able to join me due to other commitments, but he asked me to express his good wishes for this event.

The Directors and Management of IMI are honoured to be linked with KDU College. It gives us great satisfaction that we are dealing with other professionals who have education very much at heart. As you will recall, this April we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the IMI KDU Affiliation.

The primary objective of IMI and albeit this Institute is to prepare your students to later on give your contribution to the world of work, to your future employers and to the society that you will live in.

In modern business it is the leadership qualities of management and the understanding of managerial skills that determine whether an organization succeeds or fails. Peter Drucker, one of the leading contemporary management theorists stresses that “Managing is a specific work. And as such it requires specific skills, but every manager needs to understand what these skills are, what they can do for him and what in turn they require of him.”

Choosing a career in the tourism business is a wise choice. I have worked in the industry, and I have later on in life given my contribution to hospitality education. Believe me, it is a dynamic industry – one that is challenging and one that has left me no regrets. It is an industry that is full of challenges and an industry where you will meet all sorts of people – both as clients and also as colleagues.

If I may use the name of a Spaghetti Western that launched Clint Eastwood’s career in the Cinema Business, you will be meeting the “Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” The “Good” will provide you with work satisfaction, the “Bad” and the “Ugly” will provide you, on the negative side with stress and headaches, and on the positive side with challenges. Life is full of challenges and it is these challenges that will keep you young and alert. Never be afraid to take a challenge.

Let me add that your future career depends on what you do now at this junction of life. Allow me to leave you with a few words of advice:

·

Try and adopt as I said earlier, an ethic that will help you acquire a positive attitude. This is imperative in the Tourism Industry. It will help you go places. There are so many hotel staff out there who have not had the opportunity that you have had to study. In spite of this, they have a positive attitude towards their work and as a guest we spot them miles away.

·

Your education has just started. It is by no means finished. As the famous author George Bernard Shaw puts it: “The Danger with education is the illusion that it has been completed.”

·

Respect this Institution. Your lecturers have done their best to provide you with guidelines and a strong academic input. It is up to you to put it to the test. Do justice to this Institution. In Latin the Institute is affirmatively referred to as the “Alma Mater” or the “respected mother”. It is the place where you have trained and the one that has awarded you with a qualification. The success of the Institute will enhance your career. You will be proud to say that I studied at KDU. Forming part of the College’s Alumni Association will continue to strengthen the link and to help you keep in touch with your colleagues. That is after all what networking is all about.

Ladies and gentlemen, I will not take any more of your time. However, before I conclude, I would like to pay tribute firstly to the Graduands who have worked hard and merit their award, and secondly to the Mums and Dads sitting here who wanted nothing but the best for their sons and daughters.

Dear Graduands, I wish you all the best in life. Do keep in touch with your College. The staff where would like to hear about your achievements and aspirations. And if your travels take you to Switzerland do give us a call. We would love to see you.

Thank You.
