SHTCA Lecturer/Student Events 2007 January Official launch of KDU Square KDU Square; the College cafeteria, was officially launched on the 24th January, 2007; by the Executive Chairman, KDU College, Dato’ Teo Chiang Quan. The Square is another department under the wings of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, KDU College Petaling Jaya. Grapevine 2007 committee member’s election All Academic Advisors were required to nominate a student who would be committed to the Committee. The Head of School, Ms Kitty and all the Academic Department Heads selected the team of students to stand for election for the various positions in the committee. Beginning of the year, the Election process was done, and thereafter the rebirth of the SHTCA Grapevine Student Council. February KDU New Year luncheon by KDU Square – 1st catering by KDU Square KDU Square, a place where students meet during their free time to “prep up” for their next lecture. It’s a place that bustles with student energy. This place was just a recent addition to the KDU inventory beginning of this year. As always, KDU ritualistically holds a post Chinese New Year luncheon for all the staff. KDU Square, as a new support department was capable of doing what usually required outsourcing and made it an overwhelming success. The event was dedicated to all lecturers from all schools as an appreciation for their dedication and commitment to the college. March 2nd SHTCA Alumni at Sheraton Subang The 2nd Grand Alumni Homecoming was held at Sheraton Hotel Subang on the 13th of April 2007. It was organized by the School of Hospitality Tourism and Culinary Arts together with IMI, Switzerland. There were about one hundred alumni, SHTCA lecturers, IMI representatives and KDU international student representatives who attended this gathering. Besides that, SHTCA alumni chose new candidates for the 2007-2008 organization team and as a result of the elections; chosen were Andy Yong as President and Amy Soon as Vice President. The Birth of SHTCA school song – lyrics by Ms. Evelyn Tan (from SHTCA) and music arrangement by Mr. Brian Yim (from School of Arts and Social Science) Commemorating 20 years of SHTCA excellence in KDU College Malaysia and its 10 years partnership with IMI, Switzerland, Ms. Evelyn Tan together with Mr. Brian Yim composed the official SHTCA school song, entitled “Greater Heights”. April Swiss Cocktail Ten years is but a heartbeat, but like one, it is important and crucial to us as our partnership with IMI Switzerland is to KDU. The event was an elaborate one, to celebrate such an auspicious occasion. The ambassador of Switzerland graced us with his presence. Our students, both fresh and veteran came together to entertain our guests with a medley of cultural songs and dances. Launch of SHTCA Alumni at Sheraton Subang 3rd Power Chef Competition The competition was held at KDU Auditorium on the 5th of April, 2007 – in conjunction with the Swiss celebrations. Open to secondary schools in the Klang Valley and Federal Territory, the competition saw a total of 69 participating teams from 21 schools competing in various categories that covered salad dressing, popiah wrapping, sushi rolls and cake decorating. The winners of the 3rd Power Chef Competition: Farah Zenny and Farha Fatin, from SMK Bandar Utama – who brought home a challenge trophy, RM 1,000 and an I-pod each. Hot Cat Race (Hotel & Catering Race) The Hospitality and Tourism Division of KDU organized a Hot Cat event for all secondary school students in the Klang Valley, inviting students from Form Four and Form Five to participate for an experience that gives them a taste of the hospitality industry. This event included challenging the students to a Hot Cat Race, running them through service related obstacles. They were even required to prepare several cold-cut dishes. Following that, the participants of the race had to consume the dishes prepared, a task that was conducted with great fun and enthusiasm. This Hot Cat event targets at promoting KDU’s excellent courses to potential students in future intakes. May Teacher’s Day SHTCA presented “thank you” cakes to 15 secondary schools around the Klang Valley area in appreciation of their contribution to education. Home Science secondary school visit SHTCA lecturers presented a workshop and cooking demo to the secondary school teachers. Hulu Langat district teacher visits Teachers from Hulu Langat districts visited SHTCA and attended a culinary workshop. KDU Sports & Family Day KDU recently organized KDU Sports & Family Day, an action packed and fun filled day that involved everybody in the college, from students to faculty members and even families and friends who were invited to join in the excitement. The organizing committee, KDU Rest and Relaxation Club (KRRC) had planned several activities to keep everyone entertained, and the energy was high throughout this sports day, with telematches and obstacle courses amongst the games competed, factoring in also presentations from the Marchers and Cheerleaders. Staffs and students from The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) were there en masse to provide support and to cheer on the home team who took part in the games, especially as defending champions of the Marchers and Tug of War. The SHTCA proudly carried on the winning tradition and walked away with the trophies for these two categories. One of the highlights of the day was also the award presentation of the Sportsman of the Year, and the title was given to Mr. Kenneth Kam, representing SHTCA as well. All in all it was a good round of achievements for the school as we emerged overall “Champions” of 2007. Sport Carnival high tea Celebrating SHTCA’s achievement as the winner of KDU Sports Carnival in 2007. Sri KDU pastry workshop An annual event, where Sri KDU primary students attended a pastry workshop conducted by SHTCA lecturers. June SHTCA advisory board meeting A bi-annual meeting, where academic and industry matters are discussed. Warren – Managing Director, Unilever Foods (M) Sdn Bhd · Mr. Joehari Edrus – Chefs Association of Malaysia KDU Penang’s lecturers inter cross training at KDU PJ 12 lecturers from KDU Penang attended a training workshop to standardize the quality of both colleges. Brunei Trip – HRH Sultan of Brunei’s Princess wedding A group of selected students were seconded to be the support team during the Sultan of Brunei’s Princess Wedding. July SHTCA alumni gathering & Ms. Gan’s farewell party This was a day where the alumni of SHTCA come together to hold a farewell party for our beloved Ms. Gan’s retirement. Brunei trip – HRH Sultan of Brunei’s birthday For the second time in a year, SHTCA students were requested to be involved as support team of the Sultan of Brunei’s birthday celebration. August The 2nd SHTCA International Food Festival We might all remember a few months back where KDU Square was closed for normal operations and in its place were colourful and elaborately decorated stalls that stretched all the way from the KDU entrance through the maintenance hallway and back into KDU Square. That was the 2nd international food festival, on the 30th of August, 2007. The Grapevine organized this event for the students of SHTCA to let them experience the business side of the industry. But of course, the student’s hard work should be rewarded. The profits from the food fest are to be used as a subsidy for the SHTCA night where the students will be shown how to have a jolly good time. There are two categories for this competition and that is Best Décor and Best Sales for each individual stall, to which the winners will be announced on the SHTCA night itself. The students have worked hard for this event, and they were all quite competitive. Overall, all the teams did a good job, whilst families and friends also came to join in the fun at the food fest and to show their support. KDU College Graduation & Ball Annual KDU college graduation ceremony held at KDU auditorium and followed by the graduation ball on the night itself at Sheraton Subang Hotel. Chef Students’ field trip – Ratatouille movie All chef students from the Culinary Arts courses gathered together and went out for an outing at GSC One Utama. This is for the viewing of the movie, Ratatouille. Food & Hotel Malaysia (FHM) 2007 Food and Hotel Malaysia (FHM) is a national event organized by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) where, every two years, various organizations ranging from hotels, restaurants to educational institutions get together and compete for various F&B categories. This year sees SHTCA participating enthusiastically again. All our competitors returned from their “crusade” with medals ranging from a prestigious Gold to humble yet gratifying Diplomas. Our participating students have earned their achievements. Our dedicated participants sacrificed their precious weekends on top of hourly breaks between scheduled classes to practice and fine tune their talents for the competition. Their lecturers in charge must be thanked for guiding them through. Overall, SHTCA is proud of her students and their achievements. We hope our future competing students will excel from this benchmark and show the nation that SHTCA is really the best there is in the hospitality industry. KDU Penang’s students’ familiarization trip to KDU PJ About 40 students from KDU Penang came to participate in FHM (Food & Hotel Malaysia) 2007 and at the same time to have a familiarization trip of KDU PJ. They had a campus tour as well as a short workshop. My Pal Mentor Mentee program for SHTCA students Student counselling is a very common thing, even in Malaysia, and KDU brings it to another level. Usually counselling is seen as being only required by people who are troubled or even emotionally and mentally unstable. The “counselling” planned for SHTCA students are more aptly named the “Mentor Mentee” program. As the name suggests, it is where a mentor (lecturer, senior, etc) guides a mentee (student) along the winding pockmarked road of life. This program differs in the sense that it is not a troubled student that seeks out the help, but it is the help that seeks out the potential in our future leaders. KDU’s finest and most dedicated hope to provide personal development to the students from any angle found beneficial. The lecturers hope to kick off the program by starting with small steps of providing a career guide, sharing of knowledge and experience, and to create work opportunities. This program is designed for those students who have not yet discovered themselves or who are in the process of self realization. To help these committed saviours, a mentee should ideally be open minded, liberal, and understanding, but yet still be able to be willing to compromise, provide with sincere responses and ultimately be willing to change for his or her own greater good. This program will be an invaluable asset to the SHTCA and her students. Both parties have to see it through together with sincerity and commitment. This should be seen through until it has taken full flight. We have especially to thank for this program Ms. Lisa Yap and Mr. Gabriel for their selfless dedication of time and effort. September Congratulation high tea for FHM winners To appreciate all FHM participants hard work and their achievements. St. Scholastica College, Philippines school visit A hotel management school based in the Philippines came to visit our SHTCA to have a comparison and familiarization of the facilities and teaching methods. Buka Puasa Buffet ThreatThe event was held for all SHTCA lecturers and Muslim students. October Intro to Shanghai 1920’s When one hears about the 20’s, an immediate image of men wearing double breasted striped suits with shoulder pads too broad for them and a fedora tilted jut nicely to add an air of mystery and of course, a Tommy gun to compliment the get up comes to mind. Obviously, we won’t be allowed the Tommy guns, and the venue isn’t Chicago ether. Instead, what we have is the decadent whirl of Shanghai in the1920’s. The time where jazz, sharp suits, sleek swept back hair, and a cigar dominated the gentlemen’s lifestyle. On the other well-gloved hand, the ladies sparkled in sequins, flirty feathers, luxurious fur and long pearl necklaces. Not forgetting the fine cheongsams and perfectly lined seductive eyes. We would like to re-enact the reminiscent environment of such a lifestyle – the glamour, splendour and luxury as it was back then. November Final Exams December Charity Event As part of SHTCA plans of giving back to Society, the School will plan a charity event for an organization in need. |
