HOTEL INDUSTRY APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME (HIAS)
(KDU College, School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts)

The HIAS programme is designed to increase the market of skilled workforce in the hospitality industry. KDU College, which jointly developed the programme's training manuals, currently used nation-wide, is also an approved training provider for HIAS since 1997. The apprentices are sourced by KDU College from schools and the public. The hotels need only make a pledge of the number of apprentices they would like to sponsor for HIAS programme.

The apprentices will spend half the duration of the programme at KDU College and the other half at the sponsoring hotel. Upon completion, Majlis Latihan Vokational Kebangsaan (MLVK) will award the apprentices the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) Level 2. The sponsoring hotel will then employ them for a minimum period of one (1) year.

Duration
Kitchen Practices - 24 weeks
F & B Services - 24 weeks
Accommodation Practices - 10 weeks
Reception Techniques - 14 weeks

Course Objectives
The course aims at educating the new workforce with basic skills in the hospitality industry. This is beneficial not only to the apprentices but is an answer to providing the industry with skilled labour who will work for them for a longer period of time.


Profile of Apprentices
Malaysian citizens holding PMR/SPM with at least a pass in Mathematics and English.


Financial Aid
The course fees will be fully absorbed by the Human Resources Development Berhad (HRDB) under the Apprenticeship Fund. The Ministry of Youth and Sports will also contribute towards the apprentices' monthly allowance.


SPECIALISED CERTIFICATE COURSES
As a foundation programme, the Specialised Certificate Courses by the Majlis Latihan Vokasional Kebangsaan (MLVK) train students in basic hospitality skills. These courses are designed to be flexible and hence conducted on a full-time basis.

  • The national system seeks to change the negative societal perception and low image of skills-based careers, as only for those deemed to have failed academically, thus giving greater recognition to the skilled workforce in the country, commensurate with its important role in Malaysian society today.
Upon completion of the courses, students can choose to further their studies in the Diploma programme. Otherwise, they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to work in entry level-positions in hotels, restaurants or any other food service establishment.

  • Malaysian Skills Certificate in Kitchen Practice
  • Malaysian Skills Certificate in Accommodation Practice
  • Malaysian Skills Certificate in Front Office
To ensure maximum benefit from these courses, the students are also given training in basic communication skills and public relations. This will help students to develop essential personality traits to succeed in the hospitality environment.
