Interview Tips for HIAS Candidates
  • Preparation! Preparation! Preparation!
If you want to ace in an interview, by all means, do your homework and prepare yourself! You should be yourself but be well prepared. Rehearse and simulate a few sessions with another person and anticipate the questions that will be posed to you.
  • That Armani Suit…
Grooming counts too, especially for the hoteliers, so put on your best business attire to project a professional image. Jeans, slippers, sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and caps are not permissible. Hair should be neatly presented (no long hair for male applicants) while your attire should be clean and crumple-free.
  • Watch out for your Body Language
Once seated, you should sit up straight with hands on your lap or desk, and lean slightly forward to the interviewer to show interest. During the interview, keep eye contact with the interviewer. Speak up in an appropriate tone of voice. And don't forget to put up your best smile. Refrain from habits such as nail-biting and chewing gum.
  • Excuse me…do you mind?
Courtesy and politeness rule in the hotels.
Do's: Turn off your handphone before entering the room. Greet the interviewer "good morning/afternoon" as you enter the room and introduce yourself. Ask questions in a polite manner. Thank the interviewer at the end of the interview session.
Don'ts: Interrupt the interviewer when she/he is talking. Yawn during the course of the interview. Look at your watch when the interview is taking place.

  • Money Question?
Whenever you are asked "how much salary are you expecting?", don't answer because you may be asking for either too much or too little from the hotel's expectation. Preferably, ask politely what is the salary range for the position. The salary issue should only be raised upon discussion on the job responsibilities, contract terms, etc.

Commonly Asked Questions
The hotels evaluate your capability, characteristics, interests and motivation level through interview sessions. These criteria would then determine whether you are selected for the programme. Therefore, preparation for your interview is essential because it is the only contact point when you can personally sell yourself. You need to project a good image of yourself as well as projecting yourself as the right candidate for the programme. Please ensure that you get yourself familiarized with some questions below and conduct trial runs with another person but don't over-rehearse because you won't want to sound like a robot!v

Tell us about yourself?
Keep your answer brief. It's just a starting point to break the ice.

What do you know about hotels?
Do get some general knowledge about the hotel industry and the hotel you're applying before the actual interview. Go online or read to find out about the hotel industry such as the working condition, income, functions and types of departments in hotels, and profiles/characteristics that make up hoteliers, etc. Try to provide an impression that you have an interest, but of course let the interviewers tell you more about their hotels.

Why do you want to work in a hotel? Why did you choose this particular ---- module? What do you know about this area of specialization that you have chosen?
Provide personal reasons but from non-materialistic point of views.

Why do you want to participate in this programme?
Don't talk about what you want; first, talk about their needs: touch on how you can make a contribution to the hotel's goals.

What about working in hotels do you find the most attractive? Least attractive?
Do provide 3 attractive factors and only 1 minor least attractive factor.

Do you mind to work based on shifts? Are you prepared to work long hours?
Do not see any problems with shift work and long hours.

Why should we select you?
Because of my willingness to learn and contribute.

What do you look for in a job?
I look for opportunities to use and develop skills, to perform and to accomplish. Job satisfaction is also an important factor for me.

How long do you think you will work with the hotel?
For as long as we both feel I'm contributing to the hotel, achieving, growing and developing.
