Food Fest 2009

Food Fest PosterThursday, the 14th of May, was one day of culinary delights, organized by the students of all classes, as the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts held their annual International Food Fest.
Planning started months in advance. We all tossed around ideas for menus, themes, ordered ingredients, assigned kitchens and spaces for stalls to all the groups. With some cash to spend students arranged for the decoration of their respective stalls and began their coupon sales.

Wednesday afternoon, students could be seen “settling in” in their preparation kitchens, where they did there mise en place and prepared those items, that could be ready early on. Some stayed until past sunset.

By Thursday morning 25 differently themed stalls were set up, ready for evaluation. A committee of three VIPs investigated every single booth and marked them according to creativity, as there will be some money to be won for the best decorated stalls.
Any imaginable food was offered: from Sandwiches to Muffins, from Salads to Ice Cream, from Lasagne to African Suji. Besides students and staff of KDU, also parents, friends and relatives came over to experience the pandemonium in KDU Square (which is this busy only once per year).
With creative advertising boards, dance performances, and sheer persuasion, students did their best to attract customers to their stalls, market their food and outsell one another. Yes, there will be price money also for the stalls with the highest sales.

It was only around half past three in the afternoon that the crowd dispersed, food was mostly finished and the tired and exhausted participants could clean up their respective areas, go home and rest (or get straight back to work on assignments, due on Friday).

Mr. Oliver commented: “Congratulations on a very eventful Food Fest yesterday, 14th May 2009.
Stall decos were really good and most of you really went out of your way
to put up good, impressive and colorful stalls.”

To find out which of the classes are in the running for best deco or highest sales, we’ll all have to wait a little, until next semester. Winners will be announced during the SHTCA-Night.
